Sue has played an integral part in my career to becoming a medical doctor after UCLA. First, it was guiding me to opportunities such as a research position at the Jules Stein Eye Institute. Furthermore, she helped instill in me the confidence and belief in my abilities to apply to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Four years later, I am on the verge of graduating and becoming an Internal Medicine doctor.
Sue was extremely welcoming of students from all backgrounds, with a particular interest in helping transfer students (like me) adapt to the university setting. I took two undergrad classes with her in the English department at UCLA and sought her professional advice regarding my future teaching trajectory. Throughout this coursework and her direction, I feel that I was able to hone my skills to match the expectations of upper division academic writing, which prepared me for a rigorous M.A. program in Literary and Cultural Studies at Carnegie Mellon University.
Sue, whom I first met as my undergraduate English teacher at UCLA, has been a guiding force for my creative, professional, and personal growth. She has advised me to explore new horizons that have led me to new job opportunities and artistic paths. Because of her guidance, I've been able to further my career in the creative industry and deepen my artistry.
Being an undeclared major on a huge college campus can feel really overwhelming and intimidating. I am beyond grateful to have connected with Sue my freshman year at UCLA. As my academic advisor in UCLA's College Academic Counseling, Sue not only provided me with the academic support I needed to ensure I was on-track, but also provided me with the social and emotional support I needed to figure out what it was that I felt pulled towards as a major. She listened deeply and carefully, talking me through my doubts and fears, and gently helping me realize my interests. If it weren't for Sue's guidance, my years at UCLA and beyond would have looked very different. Many thanks!

Ever since my senior year of high school, Sue has kept me motivated, been a soundboard for reflection and an invaluable resource for advice. At times when I felt particularly lost during my undergraduate years in college (USC) and grad school (Columbia University, UC Berkeley), checking-in with Sue was grounding and encouraging: she created a safe space free of judgment and ego for me to figure things out. I know Sue has my best interest in mind and I am so thankful to have her guidance. Thanks for being you Sue!
Unlike many students who have defined a career path for themselves, I didn't even know how one could find an area of interest. The entire process seemed so mind-boggling and cumbersome. But Sue helped me to gauge a lot, not only about possible career choices, but also about me as a person. Conversations with Sue are always so interesting, that they are like a knowledge base in itself. Every piece of advice Sue has given me has been enriching and life changing. Had it not been for her support, guidance, and mentorship ever since my 12th grade in India, I don't think I would have been able to [apply to graduate school]. Thank you Sue for always being “The Guiding Light.”
Sue is a dynamic, highly competent teacher and a wonderful human being. She helped me to improve my writing abilities and develop my scholarly interests in the two undergraduate seminar courses I took with her at UCLA. Afterwards, she offered me great advice while sharing a wealth of resources, as I navigated the graduate school admissions and selection processes (for a Masters at Oxford), and has continued to provide valuable input as I plan for a teaching career.
I met Sue during my first year as an undergraduate transfer student at UCLA and had the pleasure of taking two courses with her. The first course I took was a dual course, film and literature. This course brought light to a newfound passion for expression, writing, and discussion that I never knew I had. I vividly remember one instance in which upon reading and digesting “Howl” by Allen Ginsberg, the class was tasked with a project which ignited an idea. I didn't know then how significant of a role it would be in my life. Our group recreated the “Howl” trial.
Sue took an approach to literature, learning, and discussion, that I had never experienced, and it inspired me. She solidified my passion for literature, discussion, reading, writing, and more importantly made me fall in love with the nature of critical thinking and learning. As a current third-year law student, Sue was the reason and motivation behind taking the leap to apply to law school. She instilled in me the curiosity and desire to dig deeper and push past the conventional bounds. The day I walked into English 118 was the day that Sue changed my life. All I can say is thank you for all that you have done and continue to do for me.
Sue’s undergraduate English class at UCLA had a profound impact on my reading, writing, and critical thinking abilities. She encouraged her students to look beyond the written word to understand what was being conveyed; she helped us question our own assumptions, scrutinize safe ideas, and learn how to collaborate and communicate those thoughts with others. My experience in her class absolutely prepared me for Univ. of Michigan law school and entry into a complex, ever-changing legal landscape.
When I picture my ideal advisor, I picture Sue, (my undergraduate English honors Instructor at UCLA), who gave each of us a lot of personal guidance. She really pushed me to earn my grade and has a gift when it comes to identifying a student’s strengths and weaknesses. Her dedicated attention and encouragement not only helped to improve my writing skills, but also helped to boost my confidence in my academic capabilities. She was very understanding and has encouraged us all to keep in touch with her.
